Our Story
Kweens of the North Care Inc. was founded from lived experience, educational leadership, and a deep commitment to community healing. Ashlie Laframboise is an Indigenous educator, counsellor, curriculum developer, and wellness practitioner based in Northern Ontario. With a Master of Education and extensive experience supporting Indigenous students and educators, she has dedicated her career to creating culturally grounded spaces within schools and communities.
Through years of working directly with youth, facilitating professional development for educators, and designing Indigenous-centered curriculum, a vision emerged: to expand this work beyond school walls and into a broader community model of cultural education and healing. Kweens of the North Care Inc. brings together education, identity, and wellness into one integrated approach — honoring tradition while supporting contemporary growth.

Why “Kweens” ?
The word Anishinaabekwe means Anishinaabe woman. Within Anishinaabe teachings, the Anishinaabekwe carries strength, responsibility, leadership, and life-giving power. She is a knowledge holder, a nurturer, a protector, and a guide within community.
The name Kweens honours this teaching while embracing the reality of living in today’s world. It reflects the balance of walking confidently in modern spaces while remaining rooted in culture, land, language, and ancestral responsibility.
To be a “Kween” is to lead with dignity.
To stand in your identity with pride.
To honour tradition while navigating contemporary life with strength and vision.
While the word Anishinaabekwe specifically refers to women, Kweens of the North Care Inc. is grounded in the belief that strong communities are built when everyone — women, men, and Two-Spirit people — are empowered to walk in a good way.
Kweens is about balance.
Cultural grounding and modern leadership.
Tradition and innovation.
Healing and growth.
Community and responsibility.
- This is not just a name — it is a way of walking.
